Warning! Steer Clear of these 4 Renovation Mistakes.

Spooky season is here. With that comes lots of scares and frights! But we don’t want anything scary or spooky to happen when renovating our homes. While it’s fun to renovate and spice up the house, be on the lookout for these 4 common renovation mistakes. You don’t want to get caught in any traps this Halloween season.

1. Don’t blindly follow trends.

Trends are exciting. That’s why they’re trending. There’s a lot of buzz around certain trendy home renovation ideas. It is fun to look at the latest fads on Instagram, but be wary of following those ideas blindly. Sometimes with fads, they are too eclectic to stand the test of time. This means you could miss out on the return of your investment when it’s time to sell. If you have a design that’s over the top and has fallen out of style, you might turn buyers away. Get inspired by these trends, for sure. But maybe pick and choose where to add that flare and spice into your home. Incorporate the trends but keep a more neutral or safe larger home design theme.

2. Stay cohesive in your overall design.

When choosing to remodel a part of the home, make sure you also take into account the overall style and architecture of the house. For instance, if you have a very modern architectural style in your home, renovating the living room into a very traditional design might not be cohesive with the rest of the house. But perhaps you could add some modern chic farmhouse décor to spice it up. That way it still feels congruent throughout.

3. Take into account the neighborhood.

While deciding on your renovations this fall, don’t forget to take into account the surrounding neighborhood. Perhaps take a look at comps that are on the market currently near you. Research and take note of what amenities or added luxuries those homes have and what price range they’re selling for. Certain buyers will be able to afford looking and buying in your neighborhood based on overall cost of living there. But if you add so many luxury finishes that the home is way more expensive than others near you, it could mean you don’t get your return on investment when you sell.

4. Do extensive research into cost.

Don’t make the mistake of estimating how much your renovations will cost. This may lead you to going way over budget by the time the renovations are complete. Price out the exact hardware you want to use, the fixtures you’ll implement and any appliances you want to go with. Then research the contractors who will do the work for you. Also factor in some extra time for labor as delays often arise throughout larger renovation projects. Don’t get stuck with huge bills you weren’t prepared for. You don’t need that stress while trying to renovate.
