Tips to Maximize Space in Your Storage Unit

A storage unit can be a lifesaver in a hectic move. It also lends the flexibility for you to keep family mementos or extra seasonal items that you simply don’t have room for in your home any longer. But even with a storage unit, things can get disorganized or start to overflow. Here are some tips to help you maximize your storage unit’s space and potential.

Use all available space

One option is to install open shelving. This can be a great way to utilize valuable wall space and make items more accessible. For instance, installing shelving up higher on the walls allows you to store fragile or smaller boxes such as mementos or kitchen appliances up there. You still have plenty of space to stack boxes below that. But it helps use all the square footage.

Another option is to install pegboards as well as open shelving. Pegboards are great to hang bags, bulky sporting equipment like body boards or skis, and other odds-n-ends. Again, these can go on the walls to use that valuable and often overlooked space.

And of course, don’t forget about the ceiling. If there’s space and height enough, install S-hooks and hang bulky items like bikes or other sporting equipment with bungee cords from the ceiling.

You’ll also want to disassemble furniture as much as possible in order to get the most from your space. But definitely keep the pieces together so nothing gets misplaced or lost.

Stack smartly

When getting ready to move belongings into your unit, it’s good to plan ahead a bit. One great option is to get uniform shaped boxes. This makes stacking them a breeze and takes away a bit of the tetris element. Using boxes of similar shape and size helps them fit neatly. This way, you’ll be able to get more into the unit.

You might also want to map out your storage unit as you’re packing it full. Nothing super fancy. Merely having a map for yourself will help you find items easier down the line. For instance, you might need to get at the kids’ little league gear next spring but forget where you packed it. Rather than opening each box to find it (which could take hours), you can reference your map to see that you put those items in the front left next to the antique hutch.

This leads to the next tip: pack like items together or near each other. For instance, keep all seasonal décor together. Separate toys from kitchen goods. Keep the summer sporting equipment all in one place. This, along with your map, will help you find items quickly.
