Moving and Storing Large Appliances

There may come a time in your life during a move or a renovation where you need to store larger appliances. But no need to be intimidated by this thought. Yes, they are bulky but there are some great tips to storing these properly. Let’s go over a few.

Step 1: Clean

First of all, you’ll want to deep clean any appliances you need to move or put into storage. Clean away grime and dirt. After cleaning, allow to fully dry. Moisture in an appliance you move or put in storage could lead to mold in warmer temps and freezing in colder temps. And if the moisture freezes this time of year, it could lead to cracks in the appliance.

Step 2: Secure Small and Breakable Parts

Next, prepare your appliances to move or store by removing breakable parts and moving parts. You don’t want knobs getting knocked off or loose wires getting lost or damaged during the move. Place these items securely in a plastic bag or wrapped in cloth to protect them and keep somewhere you will be able to find them when needed next.

Step 3: Protect your Appliance when Moving

Once you’ve done Step 1 and Step 2, you’re ready to move the appliance. Wrap in blankets or other padding to prevent scuffs or other wear and tear on the unit. And if moving into storage, keep wrapped to protect from dust and grime that could damage the unit while it’s in storage.

Pro Tip #1: If moving appliances to a storage unit, wait until towards the end to place the appliances in the moving truck. This way they’ll be one of the first things to come out when you get to the storage unit. This way you can maneuver them all the way to the back of your storage unit, so they’ll be out of the way.

Pro Tip #2: If moving your appliances to a new home, place in the moving truck first and then everything else in after. They can wait and come out last once you unload the other more necessary items at your new home.
