Are you a brand-new storage unit renter? If you’ve never before leased a storage unit, you might not know what’s involved with the process. Here are five informative tips that will help you get started.

1. Research different storage units before you make a decision.
You might be able to score a discounted rate if you call around and ask about ongoing deals. Do plenty of research before making a decision.

2. Figure out which size unit you need.

Before you rent, create an inventory of everything you plan to keep in the storage unit and for how long. Measuring items in advance can help you better estimate the size you need.

3. Decide on indoor or outdoor storage.
Outdoor storage units are generally cheaper, but indoor storage units are usually climate-controlled. It’s up to you which option will work best for your situation.

4. Make sure your belongings are safe.

Invest in a strong lock for your unit, and make sure your storage facility has adequate lighting, surveillance monitoring, and secure entrances.

5. Make sure your belongings are organized for easy access.
If you’ve never had a storage unit before, it’s only natural that you’d want to throw everything inside your unit as quickly as possible and be done with it. However, you’ll regret doing so when you need to find something in your unit down the road. Make sure you have a rough idea of where everything is located, and put boxes with important items near the front of the unit for easy access.
